Meaning of Unum
Unum comes from the Latin word that means "one". We were inspired by the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum’ which is found on the United States currency, and translates to the phrase "out of many, one".
The phrase is also represented in the Unum logo, which is a triangular design inspired by the pyramid located at the back of the US one dollar bill.
"E Pluribus Unum" is the embodiment of Unum’s vision to create functional, stylish sunglasses while sharing the company’s success with the people who support it, truly reflecting that Out of Many, we are indeed all One.
In the summer of 2013 the idea of Unum Sunglasses came to founder Alex Flores as a challenge, to dream big and establish a platform to give back. Given this challenge, Flores began to work hard and believed in the possibility of creating a universal sunglass line with a range of bold colors. He quickly began working to make this vision into a reality and decided to name his sunglass line after a word from his favorite motto "E Pluribus Unum", Out of Many One.
Unum Sunglasses is a company that provides classic sunglasses in a variety of colors to suit any mood or outfit . More than that, Unum is a brand with an identity. The identity emphasizes community, and they will establish and reinforce this by donating a portion of all proceeds to community scholarships.
A Mexico native, Alex immigrated to California at the age of seven with his mother: a woman "of incredible perseverance and love for her children."
At Santa Ana College, Alex discovered a fiery passion for politics that complemented his natural abilities as a leader. There, he served twice as student body president while he expanded his reach beyond campus - working on a multitude of local and state campaigns.
When budget cuts in California began to negatively impact the quality of education in Santa Ana, Flores created the Summer Session Rescue Fund, which raised money to save courses that would have otherwise been canceled. As an undocumented student himself, Alex used his position to speak out for undocumented students who were being vilified during the budget talks.
In recognition of his many accomplishments, the city of Santa Ana, California formally named June 2, 2015 “Alex Flores Day”.
Before joining Grassroots, Alex led a team to register over 10,000 voters as part of a voter registration campaign with Californians for Voter Turnout, Education and Registration. Mr. Flores has been the National Recruiter and Field Canvass Director for Grassroots Campaigns since 2015 and has had the opportunity to lead voter projects in Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Boston, New York City and Denver.
